this is the result of a conversation with indy on the subject of how individual ‘indie’ really is at the moment. the picture is for those of you who just want to look at pleasant things, its ma’ backyard!
Mainstream culture seeks to equalize itself, and its subcultures are what have the most influence culturally (ignoring global/national disasters and other things outside its control) and is therefore essentially a sum of a nations subcultures. Each subculture pulls the mainstream culture in one direction; goths pull it towards the archaic and deep, mods pull it away from visual repetition of any kind, etc. etc.
When the mainstream has been pulled in a direction for long enough that it needs to equalise again it creates an opposing subculture by paying close attention to a small group of independant thinkers who collectively represent the direction it needs, and the exposure they recieve gains them more and more followers until theyre big enough to have an effect. emo’s who pull it towards the realist and shallow, and indie kids who pull it towards reproducing time-proven symbols and styles.
